Relics of Racism Artifact Exhibit

A Historical Portrayal of African Americans in Advertising

  • Date: - (all day)
  • Location: Slover Library
    235 E. Plume Street
    Norfolk, Virginia 23510
  • Introduction: This SMC exhibit is located at Slover Library on the 3rd floor in the Gallery Hall and Glass Exhibit Area.

"Relics of Racism: A Historical Portrayal of African Americans in Advertising" highlights artifacts dating back to slavery and the Jim Crow era. Items are on loan to the Norfolk Public Library from historian and collector, Therbia Parker Sr., from Suffolk, Virginia. Mr. Parker has been collecting black Americana for more than 40 years, and his collection has been exhibited many times throughout Hampton Roads. He has also lectured at several local colleges and universities, including Norfolk State University, Hampton University and Old Dominion University. He believes that if you want to know something about racism in America, you need to go back to slavery, and especially the days of Jim Crow. His goal is to educate the public about racism in America through his artifacts. View the display during regular operating hours at the Slover Library in the Sargeant Memorial Collection Department. The exhibit is located on the 3rd floor in the gallery hall and glass exhibit area.

Join Mr. Parker for talks and Q&A sessions about his collection on select Sundays (see dates below) from 2-4 PM at Slover Library. Enjoy an intimate setting of light refreshments, informal discussion, and one-on-one time with Mr. Parker. (Teens & Adults)
